Abstract

The applications of global positioning systems (GPS) in traffic data collection and analysis at freeway work zones are presented. It demonstrated that GPS is an efficient tool in recording vehicle position and speed values and it can provide accurate and detailed information on traffic characteristics in work zones. As such, the dynamic feature of the GPS-collected data enables traffic engineers to obtain the precise profile of vehicle speed along roadway sections and work zones.
