Abstract

A revolution in policies and practices in the Maryland Department of Transportation has occurred. MDOT's shift toward 'smart transportation' represents an effort to provide Maryland citizens with more realistic, affordable and accessible transportation choices - a broad and balanced effort to move people, not just cars. To do its part, MDOT is reinventing itself to become a major force in implementing smart growth by employing more land use planners, routinely engaging local communities and other stake-holders earlier in the project planning process and bringing fiscal discipline to both the location and type of projects the state will support.
