Abstract

Moving stop lines farther back from crosswalks may reduce the risk of pedestrian crashes. Advance stop lines increase the distance motorists stopped before the crosswalks and reduced motor vehicle/pedestrian conflicts at crosswalks that transverse multi-lane roads. They also reduce the risk of right-angle collisions caused by red light running by increasing the elapsed time for lead vehicles to enter the intersections after onset of the green signal. A study was conducted to investigate driver compliance with advance stop lines at signalized intersections and the potential safety benefits resulting from their use.
