Abstract

The increasing number of elderly persons in Japan has prompted the need for developing barrier-free measures that would enable these people to walk freely without care or assistance requirements. A review of the various terms and the technical standards used in the construction of these measures is presented. Construction of barrier-free pedestrian spaces in some 3,200 areas all over the country is expected to begin by the year 2002.
