Abstract

There is a trend towards the construction of bicycle lanes in the metropolitan areas of many North American cities including Toronto in Canada. The bicycle lanes in this city are designed in a way that only very minor reductions in road capacity for motor vehicles are necessary. In many cases, the two-way, four-lane roads are being converted to two-lane roads with a bicycle lane in each direction and curbside parking on one side or both. Some 50 kilometers of bicycle lanes have been installed in central Toronto, with additional lanes in a few suburban locations.
