Abstract

The operational and safety effects of alternative median treatments on urban and suburban arterials, and the conditions where a conversion from one treatment type to another is cost effective, are discussed. Three alternative treatments were considered, namely, the raised-curb median, the two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL), and the undivided cross section. It was found that the raised-curb median and the TWLTL yield similar delays to arterial drivers when applied to a wide range of traffic demand and geometric conditions. Accidents occurred more frequently on street segments with higher traffic demands, driveway densities, or public street densities. Moreover, the undivided cross section has a significantly higher accident frequency than other treatments.
