Abstract

Traffic calming measures have been adopted and implemented in numerous locations as a successful approach in enhancing the lower range of access-to-mobility scale used to establish the hierarchical based US roadway system. Many agencies within the US have already begun to implement applications and have in many cases been forced to forge ahead by using their own interpretation of the design guidelines. National criteria such as those embodied in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), MUTCD and HCM are presented, keeping up to date with the ever changing demands and expectations citizens place on US surface transportation system.
