Abstract

Turning vehicles can endanger pedestrians. Recently, several descriptive categories of pedestrian crashes were established involving turning vehicles at intersections. Also, an overrepresentation of left-turning vehicles was documented in pedestrian crashes, finding that on an exposure basis, left-turn maneuvers were about four times as hazardous as through movements. This paper presents results of an experiment in which special signs and pavement markings were used to prompt pedestrians to look for turning vehicles.
