Abstract

Road safety audit is an emerging procedure aimed at ensuring that road authorities 'get it right the first time.' Audits can be performed at any of the five stages; feasibility, layout design, detailed design, pre-opening or in-service. An industry which aims to introduce a road safety unit must have a commitment to the process and ensure that formal procedures are established to ensure that the audit is effective and influential. Moreover, the auditor or audit team must be competent and experienced in road and traffic engineering and have the adequate training in road safety audit. It is highly expected that road safety audit will become more common as agencies seek to minimize the whole-of-life cost of road projects, and gain a measure of protection from the costs of litigation.
