Abstract

The TEXAS Model for Intersection Traffic, Version 3.0 was used to simulate vehicle-presence detector placement strategies for an actuated four-phase overlap phasing pattern at a diamond interchange. Graeco-Latin Square and Latin Square designs were applied to study the optimum placement strategies under two symmetrical, and one lopsided traffic demands. The results indicate that vehicle interval, and the length of stop-line vehicle-presence detector together with its setback distance for arterial approaches had only secondary effects on minimising delay under balanced traffic demands. The results also indicate that the location of the freeway exit-ramp set-back detector had the most significant effect in minimising vehicle delay for the traffic demands studied.
