Abstract

Road accidents are disproportionately numerous and severe in consequence at night. Studies in many countries have shown that traffic route lighting reduces accidents over the whole hierarchy of roads. These studies confirm earlier conclusions that lighting will reduce casualty accidents by about thirty per cent. On average the indications are that a larger reduction is to be had on rural roads and freeways. Road lighting is economically viable since the costs of lighting are offset by the savings in accident reduction. From these data, accident and traffic warrants for road lighting can be deduced. The data are presented with cautionary comments on the limitations and significance of conclusions, and on the difficulty of proceeding further by linking accident data with light technical parameters.
