Abstract

This paper describes the dynamic behavior of a semi-trailer truck during emergency braking. Braking is achieved by dropping a belt under the rear wheels of the trailer. The dynamic behavior that follows has been predicted by taking into account the sliding friction, the rolling resistance, the system inertia and belting properties. A model is developed to permit safety factors to be evaluated for a fully loaded truck on a 9 per cent slope and an initial velocity of 70 km/h. Typical stopping distances of about 120 m may be achieved with the braking system described in the paper. The dynamic loading in the belt and its support are investigated. Calculations show that the dynamic safety factors should be increased to prevent failure of the braking components.
