Abstract

One of the most common situations of traffic engineering concern occurs when vehicles either cross or enter a stream of traffic of one or more lanes. Road users are required to assess the suitability of gaps available to them so that they may proceed. This scenario is frequently considered by 'gap acceptance' theory which has been developed, often using Tanner (1962) as the basis. The situation for vehicles entering a single stream of traffic has been rigorously studied and the results widely used. This paper generally discusses entry into two lanes of major stream traffic but the theory from which it originates can be expanded to many lanes.
