Abstract

It is concluded that multilane passenger conveyors have only one serious disadvantage that has been definitely established, i. e. , the considerable width required by the several lanes which are necessary to give reasonable speeds. It is concluded that the width will not be disadvantageous if such conveyors are used to replace existing vehicle dominated streets or the multilane system is initially designed into a new urban complex. Multilane passenger conveyor configurations are defined and classified and their advantages and disadvantages examined in detail. Several promising multilane conveyor applications are considered. In particular the benefit of using such a system as a feeder to a transit station is pointed out. Certain limits on multilane conveyor dimensions are noted. Past multilane ideas and devices are reviewed, as are fictional accounts of multilane passenger conveyors.
