Abstract

To study the crash behaviour and the energy absorption capability of subfloor riveted structural sub-components, a basic research program has been undertaken, in co-operation with AGUSTA Helicopters, covering experimental and numerical activities. Experimental crash tests have been performed on riveted sub-components and on cylindrical riveted specimens in aluminium alloy 2024 T3. A simple model of a cylindrical riveted specimen has been tuned and a crash test has been numerically analysed using two finite element codes: PAMCRASH and ABAQUS/EXPLICIT. The finite element codes have been able to well reproduce the crushing behaviour of the cylindrical riveted specimen, both considering the load/shortening diagram and the deformed plots. These numerical models, validated by experimental tests, will allow to study the effect of several important parameters, that can influence the mechanism of energy absorption, and to analyse more complex riveted structures.
