Abstract

The paper outlines the use of computational methods to control the development of the crashworthy bodyends for the Heathrow Express electric multiple unit railway train. Emphasis is placed on the degree of integration achieved between the design process and the manufacture and test of bodyend specimens. The integration of both linear and non-linear finite element techniques allows predictions of both the static strength and the collapse performance of the bodyends to be made at an early stage in the design process. The use of modern computer techniques allows a rapid assessment of design changes, thus influencing the design at the earliest possible time, aiding the integration of the design process with manufacture and test. The use of the finite element code DYNA3D to produce collapse predictions is detailed, and the ability of numerical techniques to minimise the use of costly testing methods is emphasised.
