Abstract

The crushing behaviour of aluminium alloy and steel cylindrical shells, when subjected to an axial impact, is examined using a numerical simulation. The influence of the material properties, shell geometry, boundary conditions and loading techniques on various shell response characteristics, such as the peak load, axial compression and energy absorption are studied. An interpretation is also made of the data usually obtained in dynamic tests.
