Abstract

The Ford Falcon has been tested to comply with the US side impact regulation, FMVSS 214, since 1994. Full implementation of the European side impact regulation ECE R95/00 increased the interest in a new procedure that could provide another indication of structural effectiveness with a later generation of a regulatory Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD). Targets were established and a baseline sedan was subjected to this test in mid 1999. Results of this baseline test identified enhancements that were required in structural and occupant response to meet the new targets of this test. It was only possible to develop solutions in a relatively short time, with the intense use of computer modelling.
