Abstract

The INGRID-based model of the Moving Deformable Barrier (MDB) used in DYNA3D simulations of passenger vehicle side impacts, i.e. FMVSS 214-D, was obtained from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The "as received" model was used to verify that the model reproduced the NHTSA provided sample correlation with an MDB experiment, consisting of measured barrier force versus MDB motion for an MDB impacting a rigid barrier at 37 MPH [59.6 KPH]. Although this comparison was satisfactory, during a careful examination of the numerical model a few minor model inconsistencies were discovered and remedied. However, each modeling "fix" produced simulation results that correlated less well with the measured and previous numerical results. A parameter study was conducted to obtain a better understanding of which model parameters affect the computed barrier response. One model parameter, the artificial bulk viscosity of the aluminum honeycomb material, was found to have a dramatic effect on computed barrier force response.
