Abstract

In the present paper experimental results recorded from a series of impact tests on mild steel pipelines are presented. The pipe specimens were fully clamped and impacted transversely by rigid wedges at the positions of mid-span, one-quarter span and very close to a support. Particular attention was paid to obtaining the threshold impact energy required for the onset of material rupture. The tensile tearing failure near supports occurred in the cases of higher impact energy. The threshold impact energy were calculated with an iterative procedure interfaced with a FEM package. Two failure criteria, i.e., maximum strain criterion and maximum plastic work density criterion were employed in the calculation. A good agreement has been achieved between the numerical predictions and the corresponding experimental results for the threshold impact energy and the maximum permanent transverse deflection when failure occurs. Discussions are made for the influences of pipe geometry, impact position and internal pressure on the threshold impact energy.
