Abstract

This article considers the methods to address the problem of two aircrafts encountering one another during the planned descent of the higher-flying aircraft. The author considers conflict detection, reaction, and strategical resolution of conflict (conflict avoidance maneuvering), noting that these components must all be completed in a relatively short period of time. The author discusses how the traditional ground-based control systems have to be enhanced by the autonomous anti-collision and anti-conflict airborne systems. Avoidance procedures with descent in front of the intruder are demonstrated. These procedures may be necessary when descent behind the intruder is precluded by proximity concerns (vertical separation limits).
