Abstract

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducts extensive crash testing to evaluate a vehicle's occupant protection capability. During much of this testing, residual crush data also is recorded. This article compiles data from four individual side crash tests conducted by the NHTSA. In both tests, the target automobile was stationary while the bullet vehicle was moving at about 30 mph. Test speeds and crush dimensions have been converted to English units, and data on damage width was added. Damage was measured at 5 different heights at 150 mm intervals. Crush at the window sill, door sill and maximum crush values at or near mid-door were averaged. Vehicle stiffness parameters were also calculated. A table summarizing the data calculated from the four crash tests is presented.
