Abstract

This paper examines drivers' experiences with the Active Accelerator Pedal (AAP), an Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) system that assists drivers in complying with the legal speed limit. The AAP is comprised of a display that is mounted on the dashboard and informs the driver of the current speed limit. There is also an active accelerator pedal that exerts a counterforce if the driver attempts to exceed the speed limit. Using data collected in a large scale field trial in Lund, Sweden, the study focused on changes in drivers? experiences over a long period of use. The study also analyzed differences between driver groups, discrepancies between the drivers' evaluations and the actual measured effects, and the safety implications of drivers' experiences with the AAP.
