Abstract

In this paper, the authors focus on understanding the ergonomic driving experience of disabled drivers on highways. They describe a study conducted on the Hanshin Expressway in Osaka, Japan, in which the driving conditions and the muscle-stress force on vehicles were evaluated of both disabled and physically unimpaired drivers as they approached curves. The study found that the driving load of disabled drivers is heavier than that of unimpaired drivers. In addition, the study found that certain driving conditions result in different experiences for disabled drivers traveling at high speeds.
