Abstract

In this paper, the authors present an automatic emergency braking system to aid in damage severity for crashes involving a collision between two vehicles or a vehicle and an obstacle. The described system, known as Reduce Speed of Collision Under Emergency (RESCUE), is automatically implemented if the vehicle has an imminent object in its path that it will collide with within one second. The system uses three subsystems: the first is an obstacle detection system that fuses stereovision and laser scanners, the second subsystem analyzes odometer and inertial information, and the third system automatically brakes the vehicle pending an immanent obstacle. The system was run through a series of tests to determine its efficacy, and it was determined that the system has a .63 percent false alarm rate and a 98.82 detection rate.
