Abstract

The authors study whether there is innate optimization in the human skull bone, a compliant viscoelastic cancellous bone layer between two elastic compact layers, in regard to various material and geometrical parameters, as well as the parameters under which optimization occurs. Finite element analysis of the skull subjected to low-velocity impact is performed to study optimality of effects of varying short time modulus and layer thickness of the interlayer. Study results show parameter optimization is possible to meet different objectives.
