Abstract

This paper examines bogie skid using a model. As the skid of wheelsets results in the uncontrolled severe dynamics of bogies that lead to both derailments and damage to the wheel and railhead running surfaces, the authors believe that a wheelset skid simulation model would increase understanding about the skid mechanism and improve the safety level. Developed by the first author, this model is based on a fixed inertial frame reference system. It analyzes the skid of a simplified bogie that contains two wheelsets, along with a bogie frame that is connected through a spring-damper system. Braking/traction torque is a primary input for the model, which also calculates the longitudinal speed profile, acceleration, and distance traveled. Where possible, calculated results are validated using VAMPIRE (rail vehicle dynamics software). The numerical examples demonstrate the model's ability to predict lateral dynamics while subjected to longitudinal skid, a feature not offered in most commercial wagon dynamics packages.
