Abstract

The article briefly summarizes the advent of railroad safety legislation. The gradual development of laws for railroad safety improvement began in the late nineteenth century, with legislation often occurring after accidents involving trains. A brief history of railroad-related landmarks, beginning with George Westinghouse's 1869 invention of the air brake, is given. Selected [U.S.A.] Transportation Security Administration and Federal Railroad Administration activities are discussed.
