Abstract

This article discusses improvement in head restraints from various automakers from the period between 1995 and 2007. The importance of such restraints shows itself in whiplash collisions where, if a head restraint is designed properly and is in place behind the back of one's head, bodily injury can be reduced. The agency testing these devices found that, while many automobiles and sport utility vehicles (SUV) have improved within the last decade, the head restraint safety of minivans and pickup trucks has remained largely the same. A few manufacturers? models have regressed in recent years, and the article notes that often rating vehicles in terms of head restraint performance is difficult due to variations in design from vehicle to vehicle even within the same model. The article also mentions a worldwide consortium of automotive insurance agencies that aim to improve this design feature in vehicles in participating countries.
