Abstract

An update on Insurance Institute for Highway Safety efforts to require speed limiters, or governors, in large trucks. They are generally considered useful if they limit top speeds to 68 mph. Trucks built since 1996 have the capability built into their engines, and many trucking companies use them already to save fuel and cut down accidents. Groups behind the move include the American Trucking Association and Road Safe America. Studies show that truck speeds are on the rise, with rising proportions of trucks speeding at higher rates. A 2007 survey by the Institute shows that 64 percent of drivers favor a speed governor.
