Abstract

Bicycle couriers are common roadway users in urban business districts. The need for productivity in their work creates patterns of risky behaviors that may place them at increased risk of roadway crashes and injury. We reviewed the records of 61 injured bicycle couriers and interviewed 52 of the couriers in order to characterize their injuries and injury risk. The vast majority of the cyclists were young independent contractors. Most of them also reported some type of illegal or risky behavior.
