Abstract

The need for smart restraint systems is summarized and the overall objectives for these systems are outlined. Requirements on the occupant sensing portion of such a system are proposed, and the mapping of crash/occupant circumstances to tune/tailor deployment parameters is explored. The differences between sensing for restraint tailoring and for Rear Facing Infant Seat (RFIS) restraint tailoring are explored. Several approaches to occupant sensing are compared.
