Abstract

The sleep deprivation may jeopardize patients of the Brazilian Health System (SUS), ambulance drivers specifically. This cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the excessive daytime sleepiness of these drivers from the Northern Macro-Region of Rio Grande do Sul. The sample was composed of 105 randomly selected drivers. Data were collected by means of structured interviews and application of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, which revealed 27.6% of excessive daytime sleepiness: 22.9% mild; and 4.8% moderate. One had calculated odds ratio with reliable interval of 95%, qui-square test, with level of significance of 0.05% and multiple logistic regression in software SPSS 10.0. Daytime sleepiness was associated with apnea and snore, yet not with sociodemographic variables, sleeping pattern, health status and life style. The clinical-administrative management of daytime sleepiness, especially of moderate severity, may contribute to the health of drivers and safety on the roads.
