Abstract

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, more than 7.3 million secondary school students each year participate in interscholastic sports. Despite this, only 42% of high schools have access to athletic trainers, the first responders when an athlete goes down on the playing field. Schools that have both certified athletic trainers and School Nurses should create a team approach to promote safety as well as healthy athletic participation. If there is no athletic trainer employed at your school, the School Nurse can and should assist the athletic administrators and coaches with health-related issues.
