Abstract

Non-traffic collisions occur off public roadways. Since traditional reporting sources such as NHTSA do not collect data on these collisions, alternate sources were explored. Fairfax County, VA, fire and rescue data revealed that between the ages of 0 and 5 years, non-traffic collisions account for almost 50% of all child-pedestrian motor-vehicle collisions. Indiana police reports corroborated other studies except that alley collisions were a new category. Collisions also occurred in commercial parking lots, which had the most injuries, home driveways, which had the most fatalities, and other private streets or lots near apartments or mobile-home parks. Various countermeasures were discussed.
