Abstract

A new lumped model of the head is proposed and applied to impact studies, in order to characterize the relative brain-skull motion, with particular attention being paid to the influence of the impact duration and spectrum, as well as to the first natural frequency damping of the head observed at 100 Hz. It was concluded that the role played by brain motions in head tolerance is very important because it allows one to describe the injury mechanisms as a function of shock characteristics.
