Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the rider kinematics during and after collision and to find the difference in the kinematics and injury mechanism between the driver and pillion rider of motorcycle in a motorcycle/car traffic accidents. Eight full-scale motorcycle/car collision experiments were selected from 22 experiments conducted during the last three years, each with a motorcycle and dummy striking the side of a passenger car.
The variations in the rider kinematics depending on the impact speed, impact angle and impact position were clarified by the high speed film analysis and actual accident surveys. In addition, in 13 experiments two dummies were seated on the motorcycle for simulating the driver and pillion rider. In this paper two cases of them were summarized, the differences of their kinematics and injury mechanism were clarified.
