Abstract

The 1977 Nationwide Personal Transportation Study provides a statistically based source of exposure information on the U.S. population. It can be used to calculate automobile travel patterns by age, sex, time of day, income, and a wide range of other variables. Here the data are used to compare the travel patterns of adults, children, and infants. Exposure information is combined with data on fatal accidents to produce results that correct some commonly held assumptions.
