Abstract

A survey has been done of drivers who have had two convictions for operating in an intoxicated condition and have been referred to the Medical Advisory Board of the Motor Vehicle Administration. These drivers have an alcohol restriction placed on their licenses and are seen every three to six months and then yearly. Many of these drivers have also attended driver improvement clinics prior to being seen by the Medical Advisory Board. Since these alcohol restrictions are noted on a printout, we were able to get from the computer the number of violations before being seen and after being seen. These statistics were recorded on people ranging in age from 16 to 99 and the ages were separated into five year groups. In all of these groups, the violations dropped remarkably, anywhere from 25% to 80%. For instance, in the 46 to 50 year age group, a total of 218 drivers had 1,762 violations before being seen and 114 drivers had 270 violations after being seen. A review of these cases since this policy has been in effect has revealed that since being seen, many of these drivers have not had a violation and only a few have had a violation for operating in an intoxicated condition. If they do have a third violation, the driving privilege can be suspended immediately after they are given a hearing.
