Abstract

Between 1972 and 1976 eleven school bus crashes were intensively investigated. One bus contained only the driver, another only one passenger. The remainder were partially or fully loaded so that a total of 312 passengers, in addition to the drivers, were involved. From the analyses of these accidents certain observations, conclusions, and recommendations are made. Improvements in school bus safety design are evolving. Emotional overreaction to a very few spectacular crashes must not be allowed to distort the school bus safety evaluation.
