Abstract

This field accident data study reviews injury and accident experiences to children as occupants in injury level passenger car collisions. The first section deals with general characteristics and addresses such things as body regions injured, objects contacted, and types of injury. The second section compares and analyzes injury risks associated with restraint status, child weight, various seating positions, etc. The third section recommends where children should sit and how they should be restrained for increased safety. The fourth section of this paper compares injury experiences of children to that of adults by looking at such topics as body regions most commonly injured, objects most frequently contacted, and injury severity.
