Abstract

Following an extensive survey in selected cities which documented the reasons motorists don't use safety belts, the U.S. Department of Transportation called on industry to voluntarily produce belt restraints without the objectionable features. The more comfortable and convenient belt systems will encourage U.S. motorists to buckle up and make compliance with safety belt use legislation more likely.

Safety belt use legislation is saving an increasing number of lives in Australia and France and 11 other countries. Improved safety belt systems substantially increase the arguments for enactment of mandatory safety belt use legislation at the state level in the United States.
