Abstract

As an adjunct to a child auto safety education project, data were collected by Parent Educators during in-person interviews with new mothers in their hospital rooms. The postpartum contact took place in one county and three hospitals. This paper focuses on information from 751 mothers, 621 (82.7%) of whom received education and loaner child restraints and 130 of whom received education only. It first describes the mothers in terms of sociodemographic characteristics, seat belt use of self and husband, and other health and safety behavior. Then, the relationship between various factors and mother's reported use of a seat belt are examined.
