Abstract

In recent years, attention has been focused on the attenuation of injuries in the crash performance of automobiles. Significant improvements in vehicle design to alleviate the injuries to occupants in vehicle crashes have been accomplished. These improvements include HPR windshields, installation of restraints, padded dash, energy-absorbing steering columns and more recently, the installation of side-guard beams in doors. Crash data on vehicles which have the improved design indicates a salutory effect on injury attenuation. A major area of concern remains, however, and that is the role of compartment collapse in injury causation during vehicular crash.

The present study was undertaken in an effort to better understand the role of occupant compartment compression in injury production during automobile accidents.
