Abstract

The concept of escape worthiness as related to motor vehicle safety is presented and explained. Escape worthiness becomes a problem in the post- crash phase of an accident when passengers are entrapped and need medical attention, when the vehicle is submerged in water, and when the vehicle or surrounding environment catches fire. This paper presents the methodology developed for evaluating the escape worthiness of automobiles and buses, and for evaluating the escape worthiness of automobiles and buses, and for evaluating the flammability of vehicular materials. Typical data collected using the methodology is presented and discussed. Finally, the importance of escape worthiness to the overall area of highway safety is discussed.
