Abstract

Because of the safety features of the newer model cars, occupant injuries are markedly reduced in extent and severity when "old" versus "new" model car crashes are compared. Occupant ejection via door openings is markedly reduced due to changes in the lock striker mechanism. The energy absorbing steering column, the instrument panel padding, the new HPR windshield and other safety features are all contributing to the reduction in the number of fatal injuries and decreasing the severity of occupant injuries.
