Abstract

Early in 1965 the emergency room of the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, began to receive increasing numbers of motorcycle crash victims. By the end of 1965, a retrospective review revealed that we were experiencing a new epidemic. analysis of thirty-eight victims of motorcycle crashes, representing those individuals cared for in our emergency room during the warm months of 1965, was then carried out and reported. Statistical data pertaining to registration of motorcycles in the State of Maine revealed a marked increase in total vehicles registered in 1965, accompanied by a corresponding increase in crashes and injuries. It was also learned that Europe has been experiencing notable large numbers of motorcycle crashes since the end of World War II. The present report is a continuation of the previous study, and includes a total of 148 consecutive injured motorcyclists seen in 1965, 1966, and the first nine months of 1967. This total is divided as follows: 1965 - thirty-eight victims; 1966 - sixty victims; 1967 (9-months) - fifty victims.
