Abstract

In subjects with coronary disease, physical exertion as well as mental stress can result in an increasing degree of myocardial ischemia. Auto driving often constitutes a significant mental stress. The aim of this work was to study the effect of the stress of auto driving in coronary subjects and to determine if this may result in electrocardiographic changes reflecting increased myocardial ischemia. Included in this study were subjects with clear-cut coronary heart disease and young, normal subjects who constituted a control group. It would be of considerable interest to detect subjects with overt or asymptomatic coronary heart disease in whom the stress of driving results in electrocardiographic signs of coronary insufficiency or arrhythmias. These studies would help to pinpoint drivers who might constitute a hazard to themselves as well as to others. The object of this presentation is to report the findings obtained in normal subjects and subjects with coronary artery disease in whom the electrocardiogram has been continuously recorded during a two-and-a half hour period of driving under various conditions.
