Abstract

In general the future testing of the federal safety standards will be carried out on our highways by the motoring public, i.e. in automobile collisions. Here, these standards will receive their true test, However, in that many of the safety standards are designed for the seat belted or the seat belt-shoulder belt restrained occupant, these safety standards will not be effective if the seat belts are not used by the occupants. Because of the infrequent use of seat belts it is possible then that injury data collected from accidents involving '67 or '68 model cars will not show a significant reduction in injuries and deaths, leading to the general conclusion that the safety features are ineffective. Thus, in the future, the distinction as to the use or nonuse of restraints must be made to establish the crashworthiness of a specific safety feature.
