Abstract

It is imperative that every effort be exerted to avoid facial scars and deformities from accidents. The obligation for proper treatment of injuries rests with the medical profession but engineers have an even greater responsibility to minimize or eliminate injuries through optimum passenger compartment design.

Means of reducing facial injuries and their aftereffects resulting from automobile accidents are presented along with examples of actual collision interactions by passengers and related recommendations for interior design improvement. Research findings supporting the conclusions have been included, where appropriate.
